Aftercare Instructions
You just got a new tattoo! Here's how to take care of it:
Immediately after getting the tattoo
Keep Saniderm on for 2-3 days
It is normal for blood and ink to collect underneath the film. The film is water resistant so you can shower with it, but not water proof so no soaking (tub, pool, etc).
If outside perimeter gets red/itchy, remove and reaction should go away in 24 hours.
If liquid gets into wrap or leaks out, remove wrap immediately and start cleaning/moisture routine.
Remove Saniderm in Shower
With clean hands, take a corner of the bandage up and pull towards to stretch the bandage out. Think of how a command strip stretches, it's the same idea. Keep pulling until fully removed.
Avoid pulling it back like a bandaid for least painful and damaging removal.
Clean the tattoo
After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not use a washcloth or sponge; your hands are enough. Pat dry with clean paper towel or air dry. Avoid using regular towels as they can harbor bacteria.
Recommend: Dr Bronner's Unscented Castille Soap
Moisturize
Apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare ointment as needed. Be careful not to over-apply, as too much moisture can suffocate the skin and cause issues.
Recommend: Aquaphor, A&D, Cerave Healing Ointment
First 5 days after removing bandage
Clean & Moisturize Regularly
Continue to clean and moisturize tattoo daily. Once the tattoo starts to peel and flake, switch to a fragrance free lotion.
Recommend: La Roche-Posay Lipikar Daily Repair Lotion
Don't Scratch
Your tattoo will start to itch once it starts peeling. This is normal. Do not pick at the scabs or scratch the tattoo as this can cause scarring or loss of ink.
Moisturizing will help with itch!
Wear Loose Clothing
Wear loose, soft clothing that won't rub against the tattooed area. This will help avoid irritation and allow the tattoo to breathe.
Avoid Sun and Exercise
Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight. UV rays can fade and damage the tattoo. Avoid activities that cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area.
Once healed, always use a high-SPF sunscreen on the tattooed area.
Rest of healing process
Be Patient
Complete healing can take 5-6 weeks, but it can take longer for the deeper layers of skin to heal completely. Continue to moisturize and care for your tattoo as needed.
Color Tattoos
Healing process can look funky for color tattoos. Allow up to 2 months for color to settle. Feel free to send me pictures if anything is worrying you!
Avoid Soaking
Do not submerge your tattoo in water (e.g., swimming pools, hot tubs, baths) for at least 4-5 weeks. Avoid saunas and steam rooms as well. Showers are fine.
Touch Ups
Reach out if you think you need a touch up but please allow at least 6 weeks for the tattoo to settle in and fully heal before I can go back in.
Never hesitate to reach out via text or email if you have any questions or concerns through out your healing process. Send healed photos!!
